He's not sure of what he sees ~ Weekend Writing Warriors / #8sunday / 05/08/16

Hi! Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday round. Every week writers post 8-to-10 sentences on their blogs from a published or unpublished book. Then we "hop" around and leave comments on each other's snippets. Whether our work is already published or in progress, the helpful comments help us become stronger writers on our next WIP. We welcome EVERYONE's comments.

A long, long time ago I shared a few snippets from my Paranormal Romantic Suspense, Karma Visited (only 5) - and we didn't get a full taste of this story. Since I am working on a sequel and revisiting the story for myself, I'm sharing more with you and soaking up your comments.

Do you believe in karma? Annie Furman has a gift that allows her, while she sleeps, to visit people in their time of need - but who will be there for her when she needs help? Undersheriff Dave Turner is investigating a series of home invasions and homicides. He has no idea that solving this case will lead him to the woman of his dreams.

Sheriff Turner is at the scene of the accident from Annie's dream. He sees a mysterious woman, but very soon he is questioning his own eyes. (I edited a lot out to make this fit.)

Creative editing alert!  Here are ten lines...

Dave stood on the roadway overlooking the scene. The kids were carried to the ambulance, the flashing lights shone brightly as the vehicle pulled away from the scene. Now it was just a recovery attempt, no one needed to hurry anymore, both adults were dead.
As he watched the firefighters that were left to bring the bodies up to the roadway he realized he hadn’t seen everyone come up the embankment. There had been a woman next to the car, he noticed her because she wasn’t in uniform like the others. He asked one of the firefighters about her.
The guy shrugged, “Who?”
“There was a woman down there, next to the car, she wasn’t in uniform, where is she?”
The firefighter frowned, “Sorry, never saw her”

Dave shook his head, someone had to have seen her; he asked one of the state troopers and got the same blank reaction.

Wishing Everyone a Happy Mothers' Day

Many of my books have featured maternal characters, MOST were loving and kind, all were complex individuals.

My favorite mom character is Sylvia Hughes and she was in both of "the cousin series", His Lucky Charm and Within the Law.  When I created her character I imagined a combination Doris Roberts (recently deceased - Marie Barone from Everyone Loves Raymond), Sharon Gless, and Tyne Daly. Sylvia Hughes was a very loving mom and a little bit of a meddler and adored by her husband and children.

Some years back my daughter and her friends were playing some kind of game where they compared their own mothers to TV moms - she told me that I most closely resembled Roseanne Connors played by Roseanne Barr in the sitcom Roseanne. I wasn't sure at first how I should react to that and then my daughter explained, "Mom, you are anything but conventional and when it comes to your kids you would do anything for them. You always make sure that family comes first." ...I guess I could live with that comparison.

I was very blessed to have an excellent relationship with my own mom, unfortunately I was only 25 when she passed away and my own children never got to know her. In amny ways though I truly believe that the little things she always did, even the ones that "annoyed" me, have become many of my own habits. I know that if my children respect me even half as much as I respected my mother I'll be pretty lucky.

Just giving birth doesn't make one a mom, it's the love and nurturing that counts. For every MOM out there, for every woman who has held her child's hand, for every single dad who is trying to be both mom and dad, for every m/m parent, ...Have an absolutely wonderful and Happy Mothers' Day.

Hm, I suspect there's a good reason he's the only one who saw her.

Happy Mother's Day!

He saw her an one one else did? Must be a sign.

No one sees her but him...well, that should tell him something. I can't wait!

Interesting that no one else saw her. Brings up a lot of questions.

Ooooh. How curious that he saw her and no one else did. That certainly grabbed my attention in.

Wow. That first paragraph is just so bleak. It's a perfect set up for the rest of the scene. Very nice.
