This week we continue with Courage of the Heart, from my Survivor Series.
Last week Adam angrily rejected Davie during lovemaking when he learns she is a virgin:

She watched incredulously as he pulled a pair of jeans on, "I'm sorry," suddenly Davie felt angry, "If you thought that I thought it was going to be some kind of commitment you don't need to worry, I got carried away… don't worry, it won't happen again." She stood taking the bed-sheet with her to cover herself, "If you don't mind giving me some privacy, I'll get dressed."

Her anger made him feel contrite and he responded in much gentler tones, "I'll take you home as soon as you're ready."

"Don't bother, I'll manage on my own," She stared at the bedroom door pointedly, but he didn't budge. "Fine," Davie dropped the linen to the floor and picked up her clothing.

Earlier, Adam's body had felt as cold as if he had been blasted with icy water, but as he got another glimpse of her astonishingly beautiful naked body again, he was happy he had donned his pants to hide his reaction.

"I… I'm sorry", he turned his back to her, "I… I just can't be… the first."

Adam Sherman is a computer expert and a womanizer who is dedicated to "Bedding but not Wedding." When he becomes aware of Davie Prescott, a twenty year old student who works part time at the same place that he does, he pursues her.

Davie feels an equal attraction, but she is not an average 20 year old. When Adam makes his move to take her to bed, she confesses that she is still a virgin. His reaction is the exact opposite to what she might have expected; he is not thrilled that he is her first. In fact he pulls away in shock and says he will not make love to her. Then he gets out of the bedroom as fast as he can.

Davie is humiliated and angered, assuming that her lack of experience had been a turn off for him.

Adam is still attracted to her and tries to smooth the troubled situation between them, but she is not willing to open up to him again. Adam has a dark secret that he has been hiding, but eventually his past catches up to him in his work place. He shares his secret with Davie and is shocked that she doesn't turn away in disgust; instead she is supportive.

Then he learns that she has been hiding a secret too. They both have deep emotional wounds, and together they help each other come to terms with the problems that have created turmoil in their lives. Their commitment to each other gives them the courage to face their problems and make a new life.

I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, full of twists and turns, mystery, danger and tragedy. I cared for these two characters. I was reminded again that sometimes people have no control over the circumstances in their lives and without love and support from family and community, they flounder in shame and fear.

Tupper Lake

My husband's Aunt Wilma and Uncle Leo are the reason for my love of Tupper Lake, NY in the Adirondacks - I set two of my novels in that beautiful town.

In His Lucky Charm (originally titled Forgotten) I set Caitlyn's childhood home on the street and facing the lake in the exact spot that Wilma and Leo had a vacation home. When I spoke of the beauty of the area in the novel I was really speaking of the beauty of the day waking up overlooking the water from their house. In Within the Law Tom's house was in a different part of town, but the charm of the town was still "before my eyes" as I wrote.

Leo passed away many years ago, and Wilma and their daughter didn't make the trip as often as before - it's been several years since I've been there. A few months ago my aunt told me that she was going to be selling the house up there. It was sad to talk of but she was no longer up to the task of maintaining two homes. She was a three-time cancer survivor and a very brave woman who faced her physical challenges and helped others do the same. The past year was difficult for her though as her health took some serious down-turns.

Aunt Wilma died yesterday morning leaving behind her daughter, nephews and nieces, and a slew of wonderful friendships that she and Leo cultivated through many years. And she left behind wonderful memories and life lessons - I was fortunate enough to have experienced some of these.

Wilma and Leo, thank you for being you. I hope you are both enjoying the beauty of the lakes and mountains... together.

This week I decided to post a snippet from Courage of the Heart, from my Survivor Series:

Davie felt another shudder run through her, "but, I don't know…Adam, I…" She inhaled sharply as she felt his fingers probing inside her, "Adam…I've never…"

For the first time, Adam remained motionless, "never…what?"

"I've…never been with a man before," she sensed his withdrawal before he actually pulled away.

Adam's brow was furrowed, "what are you saying, Davie?"

The icy chill that Davie felt left her feeling embarrassed to be lying naked in bed with this man. She pulled the bed sheet over her exposed breasts, "I've never been with a man…before"

He sat upright in bed seemingly unaware that he was just as naked as she was, "Are you telling me that you're a virgin?"

He is an expert in the field of computers including programming, networking and hacking. At twenty-five years old, he is content with his management job at a local Internet Provider. 

Davie Prescott is twenty years old and a college student who is working part-time at the same Internet Provider where Adam is employed. She was raised in a very close knit family of aunts, uncles and cousins. She and her widowed father are very close. Adam is attracted to Davie, but he shies away from her innocence because he feels his shameful past is too harsh for her existence. Adam finally shares his darkest secret with Davie and is amazed to find that she doesn´t turn away from him. 

But when Adam’s past catches up to him, he soon learns that there´s a lot more at stake than just his nightmares. Adam is prepared to give Davie up if need be in order to protect her until he learns that she´s got a secret of her own. With Davie´s help, Adam learns a courage that is born of love, courage of the heart.

Interview: Chelle Cordero, Author of Hyphema

Joining us today is Chelle Cordero.  She is the author ofBartlett's Rule, Forgotten, His Lucky Charm, and other books. Her latest release is Hyphema.

Welcome to The Book Connection, Chelle. Let's start by talking about where you grew up.

I like to tell folks that I grew up in the only NYC borough that begins with a “D” – da Bronx. We lived in a nice 3rd floor walk-up facing a city park. It was a great place to stare out of the window and daydream.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

I had a very happy childhood with a lot of fond memories. But one memory does stick out… my dad was really just a big kid, when my sister and I used to watch TV with him, we all dressed up like the characters from the show. LOL, cowboy hats for Gunsmoke, army helmets for Combat, and police badges for the cop shows – this was terrific for my already overactive imagination.

When did you begin writing?

As a kid, I was always writing stories – tried to write a TV script starring an actor I had a crush on! In high school I took a creative writing class with instructor and poet Daisy Aldan. She was wonderfully encouraging. In college I wrote for my school’s newspaper and helped write news stories for the college radio station. I had my first professionally published piece, a newspaper article, in a local weekly paper when I was 19. After that it was really just a hobby until I was pregnant with my daughter (1981) when I decided to work at creating a home business. But it wasn’t until the mid 90’s when I pursued my dream of fiction writing. I am pleased to say I finally “grew up to be a novelist”!

Do you write during the day, at night or whenever you can sneak a few moments?

While I try to write my fiction whenever I can find a chance, I am most productive during the late night hours when the rest of the world sleeps. As a full time freelance writer, I do spend much of my day writing to meet newspaper deadlines.

What is this book about?

Matt Garratti was a NYS paramedic (readers first met him in my novel Final Sin). He is married now with a son and has moved to North Carolina to work at his dream job as a flight medic. His wife, Sudah was born in Pakistan, is a practicing Muslim, and is not yet an American citizen (although she is working towards becoming one). As a family they meet up with prejudice and suspicion and when apparent threats are made against his family, the local police are quick to write things off as local reaction to a Pakistani Muslim in the area – maybe they are a little too quick?

What inspired you to write it?

Matt did, the character fromFinal Sin. Matt developed quite a personality of his own in Final Sin. He became a character that needed his own story. Since Matt is a bit of an “adrenaline junkie” (responds to 911 medical/trauma emergencies), he definitely lives in the field of EMS (emergency medical services). He’s a family man who wants better for his family than he had with a father who abandoned them. He’s also a romantic who is willing to work through cultural differences and social snubs because he truly loves the woman he married.

Who is your biggest supporter?

I am fortunate to have a few very supportive folks in my corner. I think the biggest would have to be my publisher Kimberlee Williams. She is extremely encouraging and knows just when I need some ego bolstering.

If you knew then, what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?

When it comes to my fiction, I think I would have surrounded myself with other writers long ago. Writers have a unique way of understanding other writers.

What is up next for you?

I have this idea rolling around in my head for a paranormal romantic suspense but, please, don’t say anything to my publisher yet, I want to see how this idea works out first…
