Sam was devastated after making love with Ben and finding the distance between them widening. They're being drawn together again, but this time it's by the detectives who just barged into her office investigating her husband's murder. While we wait for Ben to arrive, here is another snippet from A Chaunce of Riches (creative punctuation and all):
Sam sighed, “it’s okay
Lloyd, would you please tell Betsy to hold my calls?” She nodded at her friend
and confidant; as soon as he left her office, closing the door behind him, she
stood, “is there something I can get for you gentlemen?” She was acting like a
perfect hostess just the way Julian had taught her.
“We appreciate it
Mrs. Chaunce, but all we want is the truth.”
“About what
Detective?”
“Tell us about
your marriage.”
Sam sat and
carefully placed her elbows on her desk, she tented her fingers together under
her chin, “what exactly would you like to know?”
“Let’s start with
the obvious, were you in love with your husband?”

The day that Ben Johnson was hired as a bodyguard for some rich widow and her kid, he never expected to be working for the woman who had abandoned him just when he had needed her the most so many years before. Damn it all, he still wanted her.
Samantha Chaunce never thought she would see him again. She never thought she would have to explain why she married the rich man over the man she had sworn she once loved. And she certainly never expected to find out that her rich husband had been murdered and fingers were pointing to her former lover.

Well, that's a loaded question! Nice snippet.
I like how she's willing to dive right in and ask the question on the forefront of her mind. It's a great bit of characterization!
Sam never expected the detectives to be questioning her, that's for sure.
That could be a tough question to answer!
Nice snippet! :)
I can't help wondering if the answer is obvious . . . Very nice snippet!
I'm no detective, but I would have started with asking her whereabouts at the time of the murder and then continued with questions about their relationship.
Anyway, nice snippett!
Oh and how's she going to answer that? Hope you pick up from here next week!
Wow, that's straight to the point. Can't wait to hear how she answers!
Tough question to answer. Sam is smart from what you've revealed so far. I'm looking forward to her answer.
Well there are two obvious answers, and the sigh and "it's complicated."
Frank brings up a good point, but I'm thinking she probably answered those questions, or provided the necessary information, before.
Will she wait for an attorney, or dive right in? Questioning is one thing, but this sounds like they've pinned her as a suspect.
Complications upon complications. Very nice.
Interesting, seems as if the police are trying to provoke her into saying something unwise maybe? Enjoying the story, another excellent excerpt!
A simple question that is completely complicated. Captivating snippet.
A simple question that is completely complicated. Captivating snippet.
Well that's cutting to the chase.
I like what I read in your blurb, and your excerpt lets us know right away whom they suspect.
People murder people they love. And not loving someone isn't motive for murder...
The question juts sounds rude to me... but you got to shake people up to get honest answers, I guess.
And what's the answer to that?
Wow! Cornered!
This flows nicely, Chelle. I am intrigued. I'll have to go back and check to see if this is a WIP or if it's published.
Good premise, too! :-)
You have to respect a Detective that knows how to cut to the chase.
Oh, that's an interesting question, the polite way to say you are under suspicion of murder.
