We are picking up immediately after Layne runs from the room when Justin kisses her unexpectedly.
(the following has been edited to fit) ...and now the
"Layne,"
he drew a deep breath in and followed her into the living room, "what's
wrong?"
She had
her back to him; "I... can't do this..." her voice wavered.
"I'm
sorry Layne, I didn't mean to take advantage," he touched her shoulder and
she flinched, "I've just wanted to kiss you and hold you."
She
turned to him "are you married?"
"No."
"I
am."
He sat
down on the couch, "when I asked if
there was any man in Dennis' life you said no."
"There
isn't."
"Then
where is your husband?"
She
paced, "I left him the night that Dennis was conceived."

Wow- Now I understand her hesitation, but obviously she hasn't been with this said husband in quite a while, and I'm sensing she feared this man. Interesting change of events. I curious to know how Justin will respond to her news.

Well I never saw that coming! Excellent job on the author's part LOL. Now I'm even more anxious to read onward in this book - terrific snippet.
The "I left him the night... conceived" says a lot about Layne and her feelings about Justin and his claim as well as her feelings about marriage in general. She doesn't say she's divorced or even separated even though she clearly is... but... well, you say a lot here, Chelle.
Wow she she left him for so many years? I wonder how he took that. I guess I see why she is running
Hmmm. That's a heavy last line. I'm interested to see how he takes it. Intriguing.
Well hello plot twist! I did NOT see that one coming. If she left him that night, then why is she still married to him? Why hasn't she gotten a divorce if she left him? Hmmm...
