He loves her, he loves her not... ~ Weekend Writing Warriors / #8sunday / 01/25/15

Hi! Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warrior round. Every week writers post 8 sentences on their blogs from a published or unpublished book. Then we "hop" around and leave comments on each other's snippets. Whether our work is already published or in progress, the helpful comments help us become stronger writers on our next WIP. We welcome EVERYONE's comments.

I'm introducing snippets from More Than a Friend, a part of The Many Faces of Chelle Cordero, a short-story collection which exemplifies (I hope) the diversity of my writing.

More Than a Friend is a short story based on a manuscript of the same name (which has never been published) This manuscript was co-authored by my sister, Barbara Cordero Du-Bois, and me. I re-wrote it as a short story because I wanted my characters to LIVE.

Last week Mandy told Janis that she knew who Billy was and left Janis questioning Billy's motives for marrying her. What was worse was wondering if she had lost her chance to be happy with Jerry forever. This week is the last snippet from More Than a Friend, but for now ...the 8 sentences:

Would she have married Billy if she had known how Jerry felt?
The phone rang and startled her; caller ID said it was Jerry’s cell phone.
“Hello.”
“Hi, I took a chance that you’d be home early,” his voice sounded warm and rich, “Are you doing anything tomorrow?”
“Jerry,” her voice caught.
“Hey, are you okay?” he sounded concerned.
“I, I’m fine,” her voice was shaky.

“Janis, you don’t sound fine, I’ll be right over.”

Yes, it may look like Janis and Jerry are going to get together, but there are a lot more obstacles they are going to have to overcome. I hope you've enjoyed this little preview.

The Many Faces of Chelle Cordero is a single author collection of short stories featuring Introduction, Pussycat Tails, Holiday Happiness, Not Alone, I Swear That Raccoon Just Knocked on the Door, Stormy Weather, A Mother’s Love, More Than a Friend, The Meeting, The Vacation and a special bonus section.

Well it is snowing out there tonight and
I am so glad to know that all my brood are safe
in warm homes for a change - With 3 of my 4 kids
working in EMS being out on the roads in
the most horrendous weather when everyone else
has been told to stay home is really the norm (Is it
any wonder I'm beginning to see grey strands lately?).

Hope y'all are safely tucked away from any foul weather.

What could cause her not to be fine?
Maybe next week we get Jerry's reaction?
Nice 8!

What a terrible thought to have, putting back everything she ever had in life because of someone else feeling. I wonder why she married Billy in the first place. Isn't it better to be alone than to be with someone you don't really wanna be with?

Ah, the "what ifs"... Well done.

Is Jerry the hero or the obstacle? Either way, this should be a great read, Chelle. :)

Oh boy...sounds like a lot of stress going on here. Makes me wonder why she married Billy if she doesn't really love him.

Love has to go both ways. Good snippet, Chelle. :)

Oh my, the tension jumps off the page. I wonder what will happen when he comes over. Fabulous 8.

I liked her inner conflict at the start. Wonder how he'll react next. Good snippet! :)

Cliffhanger here and his name is Jerry. The plot thickens with who is in love with who and what the heck is going on. Love all the conflict, sadist that I am.

I like how that he is willing to rush over at the drop of a hat.

I like Jerry but clearly we've got a very complicated situation going on here. I like how you're keeping all the suspense going and not making it simple. Great snippet!

Don't leave us hanging! I want to know what happens! :)

Great 8!

Ok, so we have a big question mark about who or what Billy was. Another about whether she really loved him. And Jerry who is so in tune with her that he can tell how upset she is based on just a few words. I'm team Jerry at this point. Way to keep us hooked!

"warm and rich" are the words that stand out to me, especially coming on the heels of the question posed in the first line of the snippet. Very nice.

He called just at the wrong time, didn't he? Or was that the right time? *laughs* Good dynamic between the two of them and relatable internal conflict.

Interesting dialogue. Can't wait to read more next week.

He gets double points for noticing she's upset and coming to find out why. Very interesting snippet. I want more.
