What does it take?

What does it take to get through many of life’s adversities? Why does it seem so easy for some and hard for others? And knowing all of this why do authors (like me) like to put their favorite characters through the wringer?

The answer to the last question is clear (at least to me it is) — I like to throw all kinds of troubles at my characters simply because I can and because dealing with life’s troubles is just LIFE (did you ever notice that LIFE is a 4-letter word?).I’m not a sage, I don’t have all the answers, but I know that most of life’s challenges CAN be managed. Like many of my characters I’ve had more than one life-event figuratively slap me in the face, I am no superhuman, but SO FAR I have survived.

Here are a few of the hurdles my heroines have had to contend with: Paige was raped; Julie is stalked; Annie has an abusive husband; Deanna is kidnapped and held hostage; Caitlyn’s husband can’t remember her the day after their wedding; Sudah encounters prejudice because of her religion; Samantha has to hire a bodyguard because someone is trying to kill her; Layne goes into hiding because she fears losing her child; and Alli winds up having to defend the man she loves from a murder charge. Whew! And I am not even going to start on the mishaps my heroes face.

Indeed I am trying to find humor in this post, but sometimes life does get to some people’s ability to function, and that is not so funny. Everyone has a bit of trauma and drama in their lives and sometimes their coping mechanisms seem to break down. Folks become despondent, they give up and sometimes all they want to do is escape.

Z. Hereford wrote that “When you respond positively and constructively to your biggest challenges the qualities of strength, courage, character and perseverance emerge from deep inside of you.”

Here are some recommended strategies for dealing with life’s negative events: Accept that adversity is inevitable in life; Create and know who is in your support system; Know that there are others before you who have survived adversity; and Don’t focus on past negative events, shake off the self-pity.

Throughout life there will be challenges, disappointments, pain, physical and mental blows — it is important to Take Care of Yourself. Simple things like sleep and diet can go a long way. Understand that each person can view his own difficulties as something magnified, whenever anyone is in crisis it may seem as if their world is ending.

Do not self-medicate (alcohol, drugs, etc) or ignore the difficulty you might be experiencing. Don’t close yourself off from others, you should never feel isolated when you are in pain and need. Believe in yourself and in your self-worth. It is okay if you take to prayer or meditation IF you have a belief in a higher power.

Most importantly, if you feel your pain is beyond your coping ability, whether it is physical, emotional, financial, or social — IT IS ALRIGHT TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE.

You are important.

About GDPR

Although there are a lot of people who are unclear about if they need to comply with this new General Data Protection Regulation due to go into effect on May 25, a few things are clear — even if you are not based in the UK, if there is any possibility that you are doing ANY marketing to the UK, you need to comply. Fortunately several of my books have sold in the UK (thank you all so much) and I know my blog and website have been accessed from there as well. Based on what I have heard I need to take the appropriate steps to ensure I am in compliance.

My blog and my website offers me "analytics", I know the regions where people have checked in, the dates and referring URLs... I do not receive individual usage information. I do not share any of the non-descript information that I receive (except for an occasional brag in general that my blog is being checked out around the world. I do not share any of your information with anyone and have NO intention of doing so.

People visit my pages on social media sites like FaceBook and Twitter. Aside from generic analytics I have no more information than what you have decided to make public. Anything I post or receive through these networks is being conducted under their own GDPR compliance.

For more professional info on GDPR, you can read this article GDPR Summary.

Thank you so much for stopping by and visiting me. Readers and friends are like manna to an author!

Please review me...

At a recent party a friend was praising a couple of books that I wrote - I stepped to the side and asked her if she would be kind enough to post a review. She looked genuinely concerned and said "I wouldn't know what to write".
It's easy, if you can tell me one (or more) things you liked (or even disliked) about the book, you can write a great review. You don't have to be a professional book reviewer and you can post the review simultaneously on multiple sites.
You would be doing this author and all authors an incredible favor. Potential readers look for books that people want to read and seeing lots of reviews says to them that the book is worthy of their time.
So please, I know several of you out there have read at least one of my books - please help me by posting a review on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Goodreads, YOUR Facebook page, Smashwords, KOBO, iTunes or send it to me for the Potpourri Parlor.
Thank you!

"a good quality book review is NOT the school-age book report. Your review should be a minimum of five or six sentences up to two or three (small) paragraphs. Don’t prove you read the book by including spoilers (that totally unexpected twist that really made the story). Write what YOU liked (or disliked) about the book; a book should be a personal experience for every reader so keep it personal. Be honest but never brutal; if the book was filled with typos for instance but was still a great story say something like “a few distracting typos took away from an otherwise terrific story”. (Always try to find something positive to say). If you didn’t like the book because it was not your favorite genre then own up to it; despite mostly four and five star reviews, my favorite review I received on one of my books was only two stars — the writer stated she didn’t care for it because my style was too much like Danielle Steel and she doesn’t care for Steel (who happens to be one of my faves). Again, review the book from YOUR perspective, YOUR likes and dislikes, and the impact the book had on YOU. Remember to be gentle but always honest."

Pack Rats ~ #MondayBlogs

Is it really any wonder that most of us tend to overfill our homes with memorabilia and other items we just can't seem to throw out? And eventually when the natural time comes to consider downsizing it seems overwhelming. Oy.

Reality TV inundates us with alleged financial windfalls from otherwise innocuous attics and closets and we are left wondering why our moms made us throw out those old 12-cent DC Comics, baseball trading cards, Barbie dolls, and so much more. "Clean up your room", "Get rid of the clutter"... I once had a friend whose mom tossed a complete tea set because it looked tarnished only to find out later that it was an antique pewter tea set. Stories such as that kind of make you paranoid about what you might be throwing away.
But there comes a time when you have to figuratively bite the bullet and let go - how do you decide what to keep and what to toss? How much value do you place on a child's first-grade drawing that still adorns your kitchen wall? What do you preserve? How long do you keep that collectible that will surely being you more money than you paid for it and not necessarily a lot more?

We've reached the point in our lives where we want to clean out the clutter - the kids are married and aside from the cats, we are only responsible for ourselves. In the house where we raised our family, though, there's a whole lot of memories both in our hearts and in our closets. Nowadays as I go through drawers, closets and stored boxes I keep asking myself "if I were moving tomorrow, would I be bringing this?"

I've been going through my closet after losing a slight bit of weight (not as much as I want, but certainly enough to change the size I wear) and trying to wean out clothes to donate. Of course most of the "too big" stuff I gladly am getting rid of - a few formal outfits will probably make it to the seamstress to see if they can be altered. Then there's the stuff I USED to wear and now find I can fit into again, but the styles are so outdated... would I really want to be seen in THAT? It takes time though and a hardened heart to successfully eliminate all of the excess.

Many of my childrens' crayoned paper artwork probably won't even survive removal from the walls and for that thank goodness for my cell phone camera - I am capturing those precious images JUST IN CASE. Anything that does stand up to time will most probably be put into an inexpensive album alongside the photos of what doesn't last. Another book for a bookcase.

And omigoodness books! I will NEVER toss a book into the garbage and maybe that's where my problem begins. Currently I have two-thirds of the walls in my family room covered with overcrowded book shelves, books in my office, books in boxes, books on my nightstand, and this doesn't even begin to account for the copies of my own authored books that I have on hand for various author events (by the way, if you want to purchase any contact me for personally autographed copies!). I have a feeling that a few local libraries and hospitals will soon be getting sick of seeing me.

My daughter made a wonderful suggestion and, I won't admit it to her, but when the time comes that we do pack up our house and make a move, we will pack our boxes with the absolute necessaries and everything else will be put into boxes labeled with numbered priorities; if it doesn't fit in the truck, it does not go.

It's brutal to think about.

Mark the date ~ 2011 Deltona Authors Book Fair

2011 Deltona Authors Book Fair

October 15, 2010 ~ 11am-3pm

The Deltona Regional Library’s second Authors Book Fair: Celebrating Writers and Readers will take place Oct. 15, 2011, in the library. The doors open to the general public from 11:00 to 3:00 preceded by two workshops for authors from 8:45 to 11:00. The book fair attracted 70 authors its first year and served as an introduction to authors and poets in Florida or those who call Central Florida readers their audience.

2010 Book Fair

“This is an idea that took off,” said Melinda Clayton, author and co-chair of the event. The Deltona Library is the perfect venue with indoor space for authors and rooms for speakers and workshops, Clayton said.

“Our library receives many calls every year from authors who would like to do a book signing and this is the perfect opportunity to bring writers and readers together “ according to Suzan Howes, regional librarian.

A single table at the book fair is $50 or $25 for a shared table. “We want to keep our fees really reasonable for this fundraising event sponsored by The Friends of Deltona Library,” said Clayton.

The event is available for additional business sponsors to join those all ready committed: Ruby Tuesday, Holiday Inn Express and the Scrub Jay Café.

Workshops for Authors from 8:45 to 11:00 are: 7 Steps for a Wildly Successful Book Tour presented by Sarasota author, Liz Coursen, who will have just completed an 81 city book tour.

Pamela Starr, Regional Development Director for Constant Contact will be conducting a social media workshop entitled: How (and why) to incorporate social media into your marketing strategy.

Both presenters were enthusiastically received in other Deltona Library workshops
