A Rose by any other name

Vanilla Heart Publishing is the second publisher to publish my story Courage of the Heart about two-star crossed lovers and secrets. The first imprint (purposely not including the publisher’s name) was POD (print-on-demand). When I submitted my manuscript to them and they accepted the deal was no cost to me and they even promised a “small amount” of editing and marketing; yes they did offer marketing packages for a fee but those were optional.

Somewhere between my signing with them and the actual publication date they changed their business, they no longer accepted manuscripts without some kind of payment, they even sent me a pricelist of services and tried to bill me. I made them stick with the terms of the contract, they did, but they also said that they no longer offered any marketing assistance (those terms were not as specific) and no special cover design. Long and short, the original Courage of the Heart sold less than two-dozen copies (almost half of which were family and friends).

 Since I was such a newbie to the fiction world (I had been writing for newspapers and magazines on and off since I was 19) I had no idea how to promote my book. Oy, if I had only known them what I know now. Down the road a few years… I met Namid, an author with Vanilla Heart Publishing and she was very excited because the managing editor had just accepted one of her books. Namid bragged how wonderful VHP was and that it was a traditional small press publishing company. I brazenly asked Namid if she would mind if I contacted VHP with a manuscript of my own, I had written Bartlett’s Rule (having given up on Courage of the Heart).

To my delight and surprise Bartlett’s Rule was accepted! I was ecstatic. Kimberlee, VHP’s owner and managing editor was phenomenal with support, guidance, cover design and even did an on-air launch. Eventually VHP and I joined together to produce several more novels: His Lucky Charm (originally named Forgotten), Within the Law and THEN, Courage of the Heart — this time an attractive cover and dual efforts at promotion made a huge difference. By the way, Courage of the Heart is now available in Print, E-book, and Audiobook editions.

Who is Chelle Cordero? — A little bit about me...

Hi all. You may already know me from my many posts, my Facebook Author Page, my Website, any of the many Tweets or other posts I've made... I'm not exactly shy, lol.

I've borrowed some words from my publisher's website VHPBookTours.com and want to tell you a bit about myself, sort of an introduction for anyone who might be interested.

Chelle Cordero writes stories of Passion and Suspense. An apology ~ SNIPPET SUNDAY, Nov. 26-27, 2016

I'm sharing snippets from HYPHEMA, my second EMS novel. The hero in HYPHEMA was first introduced in Final Sin as the heroine's ambulance partner and best friend.

Matt Garratti, a paramedic from New York, moves his wife and son to North Carolina to work at his dream job as a flight medic. Pakistani born Sudah, his wife, receives frosty stares and insensitive comments from their new neighbors… Matt wonders if he is pursuing his dream or bringing his family into a nightmare from which they may never wake.

In the last excerpt I posted from Hyphema one of the wives (Donna) verbally attacked Sudah for her Muslim/Pakistani heritage. The other wives were supportive of Sudah. In this excerpt Donna's husband, Frankie, approaches Matt at work and apologizes for his wife's comments. Matt is surprised since Sudah never said anything.

Creative editing (a.k.a. condensed to fit) alert!    

“I heard that Donna gave your wife a hard time about her being a Muslim and all, I wanted to apologize. Laurie told Tony that Sudah handled it real well, I just want you to know I don’t have any problems with your wife.”

Matt could see the sincerity in his eyes, “good to know.”

“So how did you wind up with a girl from over there anyway?”

Matt let Frankie follow him into the crew room before he answered, “Sudah enrolled in a college program in New York, I sometimes helped out with the paramedic program there, we met one day in the hallway and I knew that I loved her right away.”

“So she’s not a citizen, right?”

“Not yet,” Frankie handed Matt a cup of coffee and they sat at the table, “she’s working on it but it takes several years.”

Frankie took a long swallow from his coffee, “it’s just that it’s odd to see foreigners around here…”

“You know we all started out as foreigners somewhere in our families,” Matt bristled a bit.

“Hey, no offense. I just didn’t know if you guys are prepared for some of the shit that can go on down here.”

“C to Shining C” ~ #MondayBlogs

Thanks everyone for coming to visit me today, Monday September 8. All of the kiddies are back to school, summer vacations are over, the High Holidays are right around the corner...  Of course for me, my children are grown adults and on their own, but I still seem to use the school calendar - after so many years it's just ingrained in me. Hubby and I are nearly empty-nesters which inspired me to feature a simple conversation with my best buddy Charmaine Gordon, Author of Mature Romances including Housebroken and more.

Hi Charmaine, Thanks for coming to my #MondayBlogs this week.

It occurred to me that we’ve been really good friends since we first met in 2008. When I first met you at an author book signing in a local Barnes & Noble, I remember thinking how energetic you were! More than once you approached random customers and literally danced them over to our table. I guess my first impression of you that night was “Oh my gosh, I can’t keep up with this lady!”

So tell me, what was your first impression of me?

You had eight books stacked on the small table and I had one. I thought, Charmaine, you have a long way to go. This woman is smart, connected, knows things I must get a handle on and friends. She has friends hugging her and I had me, one book and that’s all folks. To add to this, instead of being snooty, you welcomed me into your circle. You also liked my dress. A big plus.

We’ve had a few adventures along the way… we took a comical car ride to a New Jersey library for a reading, me and my lousy sense of direction and you and your contagious laughter; then there was the Charlie’s Angels pose in Suffern (with VHP author Lauren Shiro); don’t forget the skies opening and drenching us in Kingston and the mad dash to save our books from the deluge. And there have been more fun times.

What are some of your most memorable moments of our friendship?

We had a booking for an author’s chat at the Suffern library but alas, I had hip replacement surgery and wasn’t quite up to going. So you had the brilliant idea of taping my segment of the chat in my house. I bought white sheets and tried to simulate a hospital room for background. Barely able to walk, I got my eyelashes and make-up on ready for my close-up. After we stopped laughing, always part of time together whether we’re on the phone or our infrequent get-togethers-you got down to business, asked me questions and I gave my presentation lying back on pillows. 

I am always fascinated by your stories of your acting years and always looking for you in a film. So far I’ve spotted you in Big and in Fatal Attraction. And I will keep looking!

Don't forget the movie Working Girl. Early in the movie, I held the birthday balloons Mike Nichols gave me for Melanie Griffith and sang Happy  Birthday. Oh, what fun.

I know how I’ve used facets of my life in my writing – how about you? What experiences have you had that you find yourself putting into your characters and stories?

Widowhood and how to live single after being a double for so many wonderful years. As I wrote, I realized my women had to be strong to survive whatever comes next. Like the ancient serials at the movies, Perils of Pauline. No matter what happened, she had to move forward. The Sink or Swim attitude. And I found that my years of playing tennis just naturally fit into one book, acting in another, swimming was a stretch in one story and research helped. It’s exciting. The whole process fills me with joy.

Along the way during this crazy friendship we’ve managed to write a few books. I would describe yours as encouraging, humorous, poignant and always engaging. I love the tagline you’ve used, Stories of Women Who Survive and Thrive, and your series of Mature Romances that goes to show that the best is yet to come. It isn’t merely our friendship that has me listing you as one of my favorite authors. I even mentioned you in one of my novels as a character’s favorite author.

 I know that you’ve read many of my books, too. Can you give me the top three to five words you would use to describe the stories I write? Is there anything that sticks out as “my style”?

Unforgettable is the one word I use to describe your books.

Where to begin, Chelle? You’ve written mystery, suspense, romance and I’ve learned so much about paramedics and EMS to have respect for the work they do. Hyphema grabbed me and never let go as did your most recent book Karma Visited.

Some years ago as we were sending emails back and forth, with both of us signing each note with a simple “C”, you finally wrote back with the phrase “From C to Shining C” – I absolutely adore that term.

I was chatting with a friend yesterday when she related a story to me - She and another friend (not mutual) were engaged in a conversation about books. Her friend told her about finding a great unknown author who comes from the Hudson Valley (NY) but she couldn't remember the author's name. She did proceed to tell my friend a little about the story and then remembered the name of the book - Bartlett's Rule !!! Well my friend laughed, told her the author's name and bragged that she knew me.

Wow, my head sure swelled after hearing that.

Chicken Pot Pie – Within the Law

Ingredients

1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cubed

1 cup sliced carrots

1 cup frozen green peas

1/2 cup sliced celery

1/3 cup butter

1/3 cup chopped onion

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 3/4 cups chicken broth

2/3 cup milk

2 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C.)

In a saucepan, combine chicken, carrots, peas, and celery. Add water to cover and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, drain and set aside.

In the saucepan over medium heat, cook onions in butter until soft and translucent. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, and celery seed. Slowly stir in chicken broth and milk. Simmer over medium-low heat until thick. Remove from heat and set aside.

Place the chicken mixture in bottom pie crust. Pour hot liquid mixture over. Cover with top crust, seal edges, and cut away excess dough. Make several small slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.

“We think Bryan Colton stole money from the people he cooked those books for. He may have hidden the money away thinking he could get away with it.”

“And if they found out...”

“He’s desperate to get the money back or use it to get away.” Brandon finished the thought.

“This is good news because he’s going to keep Alli alive for her to hand him the painting. She is too valuable alive to do anything drastic.”

“But Alli doesn’t have it...” Tom frowned.

“Right. So she’s collateral.” Brandon seemed pleased. “Either way, it pays for him to keep Alli alive and unharmed. This gives us time.”

“But why haven’t we heard anything?” Even though Brandon’s theory made sense to him, Tom was concerned about the delay.

Brandon shrugged. “That I don’t know. Maybe he doesn’t believe she doesn’t have the painting. Or he’s trying to figure out how to use her to bargain with. She probably hasn’t let him know where the painting is.”

“Alli is stubborn as hell.” Tom thought aloud. “She is probably keeping her mouth shut.”

Brandon nodded. “So we have to let him know you have it.”

“Does that put you in danger?” Caitlyn sounded worried about her cousin.

Tom looked at his cousin and then at Brandon. If Bryan Colton decided to come after him, they could be in the way.

“You guys have to go home.” He didn’t want anyone else to get hurt.

Brandon shook his head. “I’m not leaving you alone. Caitlyn and Chloe can go home. I’m staying.”

“I am not leaving the two of you!” Caitlyn protested.

“Cat...” Tom wanted to reason with her. Brandon could handle himself. He was a terrific backup for him.

“Sweetheart, I’d feel better...” Brandon looked torn.

“Tough. If you’re worried, hire some thug to watch your daughter. I am staying.” She was adamant.
