A writer just might write about you ~ #MondayBlogs

We have all, at some point, felt sucker punched when someone we THOUGHT we knew and trusted so well figuratively stabs us in the back. With head hung low, sometimes all you have to do is look back realistically and honestly to see all the tell-tale signs we should have been aware of all through our friendship/relationship. Many times we will see them, after the fact of course, and with a self-deprecating head-slap we finally knock ourselves into acceptance that maybe we are just better off breaking all ties.

I know that it sounds bitter, but I feel it is more like acceptance and maturity; every moment I waste on worrying about the loss of this so-called “friend” is a moment of my life I will never get back. I’ve had, luckily just a few, unpleasant surprises like this, but each time I can recall warnings — some just signs and actions I let slide and then a few from other people who warned me and I just chose to ignore out of misguided loyalty — and I can only shake my head.

Don’t think I regret the blind friendship, I don’t. For the years I shared this relationship I had laughter and adventures, we shared victories and life. Maybe it just took a while before she showed her “true colors”, or maybe she was a different person when we first bonded and we simply grew apart… whatever it is over now. Ironically while I admit to having a WTF moment, I have moved on and she has not. Whether it was jealousy (?) or some twisted image in her head, she is still “talking” about me and yes, spreading lies, to justify her behavior; when I do hear of her latest antics I shake my head and give her no more than a few moments thought (except of course for the fodder that becomes a blog post).

Do I miss the friendship? Only what I THOUGHT it was, certainly not the real version my eyes were finally opened to. It is much better to have fewer TRUE friends than many false ones and I consider myself blessed in that area. I leave you with a meme that been spread across Facebook and the Internet: "For every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of happiness."

Bloodthirsty Revenge ~ #MondayBlogs

You’ve been wronged, lied about, betrayed, ignored… how bloodthirsty are you? At what point will revenge taken ever be enough?

When we are hurt by the actions of another, angered by the pain that was inflicted, and frustrated because we NEED vindication, our imaginations soar with a need to Get Even.

Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.
~ Confucius

Will revenge really ever even things out? We can certainly ensure that someone else feels the pain we felt, but will that ever erase our pain? More importantly what ELSE could we have done with our lives in the time it took to plan and successfully execute our horrible revenge?

When you are totally absorbed in what you THINK will make you feel better and devising ways to make someone suffer as much as you did, you are wasting your own precious life — and you only have one life. What joys did you miss out on, what beauty did you fail to see, and who else (quite possibly innocent) will suffer because of your obsession?

Turn the other cheek you say?! How many times can we do that and still feel worthy of happiness? There are times we just want others to pay for the callousness, the crime, the wrongs inflicted. Sometimes we just want things to be righted. We want justice… or is it merely revenge? Will we get “pleasure” from taking revenge? And if so, what does that say about us? Maybe we are due some JUSTICE, is that the same as revenge? No.

It is essential that justice be done; it is equally vital that justice not be confused with revenge, for the two are wholly different.
~ Oscar Arias

Justice should be logical, thought out, and fair. Revenge is a gut reaction, it’s emotional and most often can be an overreaction. Justice should have a positive effect, perhaps a rehabilitation, a wrong corrected to some extent, removing a danger from hurting others. Revenge is negativity, it can become a blind hatred that goes overboard hurting anyone who comes in contact, revenge only leaves more scars. Any satisfaction felt from meting out revenge is usually short lived and often replaced with guilt.

A man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green.
~ Francis Bacon

Revenge can steal your life if you allow it. It’s been said that the best revenge is a life well lived and it is true, enjoy success, beauty, love, and friends. Don’t let all these good things pass you by because you can only focus on revenge.

When you feel as if you’ve been stabbed a hundred-million times in the heart and the pain seems more than you can bear, just saying “get over it” sounds so much easier than doing it. When the need for revenge consumes you, when it is always in your mind and heart, you can’t just wave some magic wand and cast it out. Replace it.

Get involved in a positive activity, a project, a cause – find something GOOD to throw all of your passion, your angst and that driving need to make things right. The need for revenge is not healthy; it can grow like a tumor until it strangles you. Replace the UNhealthy obsession with positive drives and action that will benefit others. You will feel better about yourself.

And that is a WIN.

Betrayal - Weekend Writing Warriors / #8sunday / 02/01/15

Hi! Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warrior round. Every week writers post 8 sentences on their blogs from a published or unpublished book. Then we "hop" around and leave comments on each other's snippets. Whether our work is already published or in progress, the helpful comments help us become stronger writers on our next WIP. We welcome EVERYONE's comments.

I'm introducing snippets from More Than a Friend, a part of The Many Faces of Chelle Cordero, a short-story collection which exemplifies (I hope) the diversity of my writing.

More Than a Friend is a short story based on a manuscript of the same name (which has never been published) This manuscript was co-authored by my sister, Barbara Cordero Du-Bois, and me. I re-wrote it as a short story because I wanted my characters to LIVE.

Jerry knew something was wrong when he heard how upset Janis sounded and he came over right away. I hadn't planned to continue with this story this week, but several of you said you were curious about what would happen, so ...the 8 sentences:

She told him about Loretta’s tirade and how it led to the conversation with Mandy; she asked him if it was true, did he love her?
It took a moment for Jerry to overcome his embarrassment, “Janice, I loved you since the day I first met you, the first day we spent in the squad car together.”
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
“You were new to the force and I knew you felt like you had to prove yourself.” He paused, “Would it have made a difference?”
“Billy said that you had a girlfriend and that was why you asked him to take me home after Mandy and Brian’s wedding.”
“He told me that you wanted to leave early and had asked him to drive you.”
Billy had betrayed both of them.

Yes, it may look like Janis and Jerry are going to get together, but there are a lot more obstacles they are going to have to overcome. I hope you've enjoyed this little preview.
Next week I am moving on to another story.

It's Super Bowl XLIX

While avid sports fans will be watching the game today, there are those who are in it just for the snackage and drinks, and even more who will be glued to TV sets all over just for the commercials - "A 30-second advertisement during this year's game costs a cool $4.5 million. That's an average of $150,000 per second." Oh my!

This year running right alongside well-trained horses and lost puppies, attractively scented men, cell-phones, and frugal hotel accommodations,  will be a very important PSA (public service announcement) that will hopefully get people thinking and talking.

Welcome to a snippet from Within the Law. The protagonist, Tom Hughes, was created in His Lucky Charm (formerly called Forgotten). Tom is cousin to the female main character in HLC. I fell in love with Tom, I think he might be my favorite hero from all of my books. His character and his history was so compelling that I HAD to write his story, one in which he has his own HEA.

Tom brings Alli back to her place and they spend the night talking. They agree to keep their friendship outside of the courtroom a secret and to just remain good friends... there are too many complications. She tells him about her ex-husband, her family and her job. Tom can't resist kissing her, but when the kiss deepens he pulls back.

His breathing was stilted. “I’m so sorry,” he barely mouthed the words.
“No... don’t stop,” Alli tried to hold him there, “Tom, it’s been so long since a man has touched me like this.” She looked fragile, she looked as if his next touch would either break her or fortify her.
He mumbled more to himself than to her, “my timing sucks.” Why now, he thought, why now when all his memories of Joyce had been stirred up? Tom sat up on the couch; he pulled her to him and held her against his chest while he stroked her hair.

He thought about what she had just said to him, “have you been with anyone since your husband?”

Tom gave up on ever falling in love again the day that he buried his high school sweetheart and fiancé. He started a career in law enforcement just so that he could find her murderer and rapist. Just when he is about to see justice done, he meets Alli Davis-the defense attorney for the murdering rapist who took his love from him.

Tom can't avoid his attraction to Alli - Weekend Writing Warriors / #8sunday / 08/10/14

I fell in love with Tom, I think he might be my favorite hero from all of my books. His character and his history was so compelling that I HAD to write his story, one in which he has his own HEA.

This picks up just a few paragraphs after last week's snippet... Tom wavers between his anger at what he feels is Alli's duplicity and his attraction to her. Finally his anger wins out and he storms out of the diner in anger. BTW, Cat is his cousin, the heroine from His Lucky Charm. (Sorry, I went 9 sentences this week)

Years ago, his mother had said to him that Joyce had died, he didn’t. He felt like giving up on life back then; Tom didn’t want to leave the house or see his friends, it was just too painful. The only one he ever let close to him was Cat, he didn’t want to talk to anyone else; he just wanted to build a wall around himself and keep the outside world away. It hurt to admit it, but his mother was right, it had taken some coercing and the help of a few friends pushing him, but he’d dated since then and even had a few very satisfying relationships. He didn’t feel like he was cheating on Joyce, he was just trying to live.
He briefly had thought about showing up on Alli’s doorstep sometime just to see where things might go, when he had left her apartment last night, he was amazed at how many of his senses felt alive again, but, after today...
“Tom,” he stopped and let her catch up to him, “if we had met under different circumstances, do you...”
He took her in his arms and kissed her, she kissed him back without hesitation. Finally, they stepped apart, “Does that answer your question?”

Tom "licks his wounds" - Weekend Writing Warriors / #8sunday / 08/03/14

The Senior Defense Attorney (Justin) grilled every witness and even tried to lay some of the blame on Tom in order to cast doubt about the defendant's (Roy Dunlop) guilt. Alli couldn't look at Tom in the courtroom. Later after court is recessed for the day and after he calls his cousin to talk and calm down, he goes to the motel's diner for a quick bite. While he's there, Alli approaches him and apologizes...

“Tom, I am sorry that Justin grilled you like that today...”
“He was just doing his job, get the scum buckets back out on the street, that was nice investigating work you did by the way, did he really have all that information about my cases or was some of it just lucky guesses?” He sounded cynical.
“I try to do my job thoroughly,” Alli sat back while the waitress poured her coffee and put the salad on the table, “I really can’t discuss the case, I just wanted to say that I had no idea who you were last night.” She chuckled, ”I guess I wasn’t as thorough as I thought, I never had your photo ID pulled.”
He couldn’t help but wonder if she would have smiled at him the way she did if she had known who he was the night before. “Well, I guess you were lucky that I wasn’t another Dunlop, who knows who else is out there walking the streets after some smooth lawyer got him off?”

When Love is Not Enough

A common thread in all of my stories is trust. Sometimes there is complete lust, sexy attraction, passionate opportunities – but if the couple has a chance in hell, or heaven, they have to trust each other.

In Bartlett’s Rule Paige’s past makes it difficult for her to trust any man and nearly impossible for her to trust her own judgment. Along comes Lon whose patience and compassion teaches her she can trust. Then when events occur that put Lon in jeopardy, Paige never loses her faith in him even though she’s prevented from showing her support. Brandon deceives Caitlyn in a vain attempt to keep her safe in His Lucky Charm, instead though he almost loses her for good when his duplicity is too much for her to accept.

Adam shares his deepest secret with Davie in Courage of the Heart. While Adam trusts her enough to take the risk he is scared of her reaction, but thrilled when he receives her acceptance. In Final Sin a psychopath targets Jake and Julie when they act on their mutual attraction. Despite the torrid passion between them, they are torn apart when they lose trust in each other, it’s that trust that will, hopefully, save them both.

This theme is prevalent in all of my novels and stories whether is a passionate love affair or a close, platonic friendship –In Not Alone, a short story in the Forever Friends anthology, trust is questioned when a mutual friend dies in a car accident and when trust is regained and strengthened, the friends stand by each other.

Most of my stories involve love, many even include mind-blowing sex, but sometimes even love isn’t enough to make and keep my characters happy and bonded with each other. I believe that trust is the foundation of any worthwhile relationship.

(excerpt from A Chaunce of Riches)

“Where are you going? You’re the one who wanted to... have sex. I just want to see what you wear to bed.” He was talking in a loud whisper so that no one else in the house was disturbed.

“You weren’t drunk when I said I wanted to make love with you.” She tried to pull her hand away again but he wouldn’t let her go.

“I told you I am not drunk.” He sounded annoyed. “And I didn’t come here to have sex with you.”

She relaxed and stopped pulling away from him. “Then why are you here?”

“We need to talk.” He sat down heavily on the side of her bed and leaned back against the headboard. Ben kicked his shoes off and stretched his long legs out in front of him. He was still holding on to her.

She was annoyed that he had frightened her. “What do you want to talk about?”

Ben took her by the shoulders and turned her towards him. He squinted in the dark. Sam felt exposed under his gaze. “Is that a nightgown? How long is it?”

“To my knees.” She still wasn’t convinced of his sobriety.

He released her suddenly. “It’s not very sexy.”

“Well excuse me, I didn’t know I had to dress for company.” She sounded indignant.

“I remember when you used to wear one of my T-shirts to bed. Now that was sexy.” He told himself that her tousled hair and the simple fact that she was lying there in a bed wasn’t turning him on.

“That was a long time ago.” She painfully whispered.

He laughed. Then there was silence.

Finally Sam sighed and relaxed beside him. “What did you want to talk about?”

He looked at her in the dark. “You, me, sex, your husband, who killed him and who is trying to scare you?”

“Is that all one question?”

“Don’t be bitchy.” He sounded exasperated. “Did you love him?”

“Julian? He was a good man.”

Ben snorted. “That doesn’t sound like you loved him.”

“He’s gone.” She sounded sad. “Why do you need to ask?”

He grimaced. “Did you ever love me Sam? I know you said you did. But did you really?”

“Yes.” She still did but she knew he would never believe her.

“Then I don’t understand why you did what you did. If it were just the money... Sam, it’s not like you had a fling with the guy. You married him... you gave him a son. You lived in his world.” His words hung in the air. “And you never thought twice about me.”

He could hear her breathing in the dark. Sam was struggling not to cry.

“I can’t undo the things I did. I am so sorry I hurt you Ben.” Her voice cracked and she had to pause. “I really thought you would have found someone else and would be married by now...”

“I will never again put myself out there. I will never again trust a woman with my heart.”

“But Ben,”

“Don’t sound so surprised. That’s the lesson you taught me Sam.” He shook his head. “I never needed someone as much as I needed you when I woke up in the hospital. You have no idea what I went through.”

“Tell me.” He didn’t know how much she knew. He didn’t know that she was willing to do anything to save his life. He didn’t know that she was willing to sell herself to Julian to pay for his medical care.

“No. It was a long road. If you had cared, you would have been there.”

“So are you saying we’re stuck now? We can’t move on?” Sam turned to him. “Ben, we’re here now, together. We can be together now. Ben, you could have died but you didn’t...”

“We both could have died.” He thought she was talking about the car accident. “And you could have stayed.” He was quiet for a long time. “I wish I could forgive you, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to.”
